Bravery in The Odyssey

The Odyssey is an epic poem. Odysseus, the main character in the epic seems more powerful, brave, and smarter than most men and women. A famous blind man named Homer writes The Odyssey. Homer wrote The Odyssey in about 5th century B.C. Odysseus displays characteristics of the typical epic hero through his strength, bravery and unit.

Odysseus is stronger than other characters, and sometimes his strength is superhuman. One example of this is when Odysseus’s men opened the sack filled with air. The sack made the ship get messed up. They landed on an island where a witch lady lives in a great stone palace. Odysseus is mad at his men for betraying him, because he didn’t tell them what was in the sack and when he fell asleep his men opened it. Odysseus sends his men out to look for food on the island. The men find a cliff with a clearing at the top, and they hear a lady singing a beautiful song. So they find a way up it, and the witch offers the men some food and some wine but one of the men do not go in. When the men drink the wine they are turned into animals. The man that doesn’t drink the wine goes and tells Odysseus. Odysseus goes after his men and finds the cliff. He doesn’t even look for a path he just starts climbing. The cliff is huge so most people wouldn't even of thought about climbing it. This shows Odysseus’s strength.

Odysseus seems like he has a lot of courage. Odysseus is braver than the other characters and sometimes he exhibits superhuman courage. Odysseus showed courage when he was forced to leave Ithaca on the day of his son’s birth. Odysseus had to go across the world and over to Troy to fight a war against the Trojans. Coincidently the day he had to leave on the day of his son’s birth. Usually any man wouldn’t go but Odysseus went because he knew in his heart that he would return. This shows Odysseus’s courage.

When Odysseus finally does get home he does not go straight to find his wife and child. Odysseus is more clever and full of guile than the other characters in the epic because when he got back to Ithaca he knew he would be killed if he walked right into...
