Changing Dream in The Grapes of Wrath

The Grapes of Wrath was written by award winning author John Steinbeck, it won the Pulitzer prize in 1940. Steinbeck was born In Salinas, California in 1902. John Steinbeck one the Nobel Prize for literature. He has written many touching books such as , Tortillia Flat, Dubious Battle and Of Mice and Men. Steinbeck was a fantastic author and a compelling man, he died at his home in New York City in 1968.

The Joads have overcame many things throughout the novel Grapes Of Wrath such as death, depression, and separation. This essay will show you how the Joads thoughts, dreams and outlooks on life changed even they gained no future or financial security.

The dreams and nightmares all began when the dust bowl rose and the rain stopped. This dried up the land and ruined all the crops. Not only did this hurt land it hurt the people farming it. The farmers had worked the land so hard there was nothing left of it but dust. This forced all the farmers to sit and wait. Wait for the rain.

After waiting for it to rain the Joads had no choice they were forced off the land and decided the best place for them was California. The Joads son Tom had just been released from prison to find his family living with there uncle. He arrived just in time to see his family getting ready o leave the state. He was wary about leaving because of his probation but he realized it was his only option. But before the family could even leave they already ran into there first problem. Grandpa at the last second decided he did not want to leave, he told the family “ I aint sayin for you to stay, you go right along. Me, I’m a stayin, I give her a goin all night mosly. This here’s my Country I blong here”(Steinbeck pg.84). This forced the Joads to temporarily take grandpa out of his write thinking mind. It was the best thing for the family. After that they left for California. Later on in the story the Jaods encounter another tragedy when Grandma dies.
