Theme, Characterization, and Thoughts on MacBeth

(1) Introduction:

Shakespeare’s «Macbeth» is one of the most tragic plays of Shakespeare. For the play, Shakespeare creates a person called, Macbeth, who is an ordinary general in the king’s army, who is Duncan at the time. With series of events, and murdering the king, Macbeth becomes the new king, but he loses the king position, this all have been predicted, by three evil witches, who Macbeth meets before murdering the king. The play happens in Scotland. Reason will be explained throughout the essay.

(2) Historical Context:

The king, at the time, was James VI of Scotland, and this is why, the play is written in Scotland. Shakespeare wrote «Macbeth» in the year 1606. A year after the threat to the James VI. Shakespeare wrote «Macbeth» in purpose of toadying to the king. At the same time, 16th and 17th centuries were the time of witchcraft, meaning that people believed in witches, or if they see an old woman, living alone, they would think that there is a witch living in that house. In addition, people were thinking that, God has sent the king; so murdering the king (God) is equal to divine right of king, or killing the God.

(3) Shakespeare’s Language:

Shakespeare's stories of glory, passion, honour, sorrow, and all the deepest of human feelings, move each generation to marvel at his genius.

1- Iambic Pentameter:

Shakespeare wrote his plays in a style of Iambic Pentameter. This means rhythm in a line of poetry, which has five weakly stressed syllables each followed by five strongly stressed syllables. Iambic pentameter is a meter in poetry, consisting of lines with five feet (hence "pentameter") in which the iamb is the dominant foot (hence "Iambic"). Iambic rhythms are quite easy to write in English and iambic pentameter is among the most common metrical forms in English poetry.

2- Imagery:

Blood, magic, beauty, rage, power - these are powerfully suggested throughout «Macbeth».

In all of Shakespeare's plays he uses many forms of imagery. Imagery, the art of making images, the products of imagination. In the play «Macbeth» Shakespeare applies the imagery of clothing, darkness and blood. Each detail is his imagery; it seems to contain an important symbol of the play, symbols that the reader must understand if they are to interpret either the passage or the play as a whole.
