Everyday Economics: Application Essay

I have taken two economics courses in the past few years; one here at Bucknell and one year long course I took my senior year of high-school. Although they were both basic principles classes, they have both fascinated and inspired me. When I signed up for the course I took in high-school all I knew about economics was that it had to do with money and the economy, which I knew nothing about. After the first few weeks of the course I could see that it was the first subject I had ever studied that really had pertinence to the “real world.” This is what fascinates me so much about the subject still. It is a social science that deals so much with our everyday lives. It does this more so than any other topic I have studied.

When studying economics, be it micro or macro, you are taking both a scientific and philosophical approach to people’s behaviors. The scope of this subject is incredibly broad, and that is what I love about it. We make generalizations and theories that span from an individual’s actions, to a company’s, to a group of people’s, and finally to different nation’s. There are local economies, national ones and global economies. And, they all deal with the same basic principle of satisfying human wants and needs with the limited resources we have to produce these things.

In the society that we live in, everyone must take this principle into account. It dictates so much of our everyday lives that a lot of the times we may not even think about it. For example, when we decide whether or not to go out for lunch or just make something at home, we are making an economic decision on some level. This decision, although very miniscule, is rooted deep with economic thought from where the lunch comes from, how it gets there, who prepares it and how it is paid for. These ideas are the everyday ones that interest me in studying economics. They range from these small decisions to very large ones regarding economic policy and foreign trade. Choices like these are all around us, and they all circle back to the principles of economics.
