Himmler's Involvement in World War II

Himmler's Involvement in World War II

During World War 2 there were many atrocities led by Hitler and his 2nd in command Heinrich Himmler. Heinrich Himmler was born in Munich on October 7, 1900. He fought in World War 1 and afterwards came into one of the many right wing soldiers organizations that were so prevalent at the time. It was there that he saw Hitler. He took part in the Hitler Putsch (an attempt to overthrow the government) of 1923. He married Margret Boden in 1926.

In 1929, Hitler made Himmler the head of the SS, which then at that time about 33 men served mainly as a bodyguard for Hitler. A good organizer, he had expanded the SS to 50,000 men by 1933. By 1936, he had combined police power in Germany and was named Chief of the German police. With all of the police and the Gestapo (secret state police), were now under Himmler’s control, his power was without a limit. He was responsible for the security services and the concentration camps, which at the time had prisoners of the state.

When it came time for Hitler to order the death of the Jews he gave the orders to Himmler and he simply blindly obeyed. He carried out his orders and the first murder were carried out by shootings, but this was not as “efficient” as the gassing and spared the ss men the necessity to murder women and children in cold blood. Himmler made the decision to use hydrocyanic acid and carbon monoxide a poisonous gas used in stationary and mobile gas chambers in Poland. It was estimated that around 6 million Jews and 6 million non-Jews were killed during this Final Solution.

After the war, Himmler tried to negotiate peace with the World Jewish Congress. Attempting to flee undercover in 1945, he was captured and arrested by the British forced. When a doctor was ordered to search him for poison on his body, he bit down on a cyanide capsule hidden in his mouth and died a few minutes later. * Like Hitler, he chose suicide as his way to exit the world.*
