Benefits of Legalizing Marijuana
The legalization of marijuana varies from country to country. In most places, the possession of marijuana is illegal. Marijuana is legal in the Amsterdam, Netherlands, Uruguay, and some parts of the United States. In 2013, Uruguay was the first country to legalize the production, distribution, and sale of marijuana. The medical use of marijuana is legal in a couple of countries. Federal and state laws are allowed to be different when it comes to making laws in different states. The real question is, should marijuana be legal? I will defend the position that marijuana is a relatively harmless drug that governments around the world have made illegal. For those that may not be awawre of what Marijuana is, itis a greenish-gray mixture of the dried flowers of Cannabis sativa. Some people smoke marijuana in hand-rolled cigarettes called joints; in pipes, water pipes (sometimes called bongs), or in blunts (marijuana rolled in cigar wraps)(“What is Marijuana?”).There are benefits to society in a number of ways; whether it is for medical, economic, or public safety reasons. Marijuana has been proven to treat plenty of life debilitating and even life-threatening diseases. There are a few benefits of legalization and many more that can be looked into. The first benefit is the financial gains that governments will accomplish through the taxation of marijuana. The second benefit is this may help control violence and safety controls. The last, but not least reason is the benefit of marijuana being a medicinal drug, not only for cancer like most people think, but also for people with Alzheimer’s disease. Physical, psychological, spiritual, economic, and medical benefits are possible with the legalization of marijuana.
Marijuana, also referred to as weed, pot, and although it is not a cure, marijuana can ease the pain and suffering of a person. This is a realistic claim if marijuana sales are compared to that of cigarettes or even alcohol, both of which that can kill you. Governments make billions each year from cigarette and alcohol taxes. According to Tax Foundation, “A mature marijuana industry could generate up to $28 billion in tax revenues for federal, state, and local governments, including $7 billion in federal revenue: $5.5 billion from business taxes and $1.5 billion from income and payroll taxes.” This naturally found plant known as marijuana is recognized all around the world.
