Multiple Beneficiaries of Community Service
For my community service trip I took a visit to the Salvation Army Thrift Store. I was with some other people from class so I had someone to talk to when I was there. The person in charge of us was Angie she was a really nice lady, she is a daily volunteer up at the army, she’s been working on and off for three years.
When I was there I did a variety of things. I vacuumed the carpets in the back of the store, they were very dirty, I dusted and sorted close also. The thing I most enjoyed was interacting with the customers there, some I knew and some I didn’t, there were quite a bit of people up there buying clothes for Halloween costumes. The lady up there also explained to us the intricate way that the whole store and the other two portions of the army, the pantry and the church operate.
I learned quite a bit of things when I was up there. They showed us how they sort clothes a certain way. I also learned that they don’t take donations all of the time because they get over stocked. Angie told us that our community is a very good supporter of the Salvation Army and she is proud of that, I am too!! She was also telling us how the coat dive works and that was very interesting. On the other hand I learned that the Salvation Army helps out the poor members of our community quite a bit. Overall it was a good learning experience.
The project had somewhat of an emotional effect on me too. I didn’t like seeing how some of the people who come in their live, it was pretty sad. I think I am going to go back up there and volunteer again when this project is over.
This project was a very worthwhile learning experience to me. I want to be more active in volunteering my time now. It had a large impact on me and how I think as a person. I think this is a very good project for your class and is a definite keeper. I know it is going to have a long-lasting residual effect on me as a person.
