Purpose of Computer Systems Analysts

Computer Systems Analysts improve existing computer systems and develop new ones. They begin by gathering information. They talk to the managers and staff and find out what their needs are. Once the goals are clear, they determine if they need to design a new software system. Once the system is set up, the analysts train staff how to use it. They may have to write manuals and documentation on how to use the system. Some analysts are employees of the organization where they do the work. This type of analysts also helps staff solve problems with their computers. There is a rapid spread of computers and information, so a computer systems analyst must keep their knowledge up-to-date by reading manuals and magazines. They may also take classes.

It is suggested that you take high school computer classes to prepare for this occupation. It is recommended that you take a class or two in computer networks and get familiar with how networks operate. I am a sophomore and I have already taken two computer classes that teach the basics of computer programs. I have also taken a word processing class, and I am currently in a Cisco Networking class. It is a two-year class that teaches how to network. It is recommended that you don’t spend all your time at the computer. It’s important to develop communication and people skills. You should participate in speech classes, and sports and leadership roles.

There is no universally accepted way to prepare for a job as a computer professional, but most employers want some college education. For many jobs you need at least a bachelor’s degree. For some jobs you may only need a 2-year degree. Persons with graduate degrees are preferred. It is recommended that you look seriously at a computer science or computer engineering degree.

Computer systems analysts will have a medium level of social contact. They work alone programming, and also work with the staff. They train employees how to use programs. They usually work at least 40 hours a week, and sometimes will have to work evenings and weekends when deadlines need to be met. They sometimes will travel to seminars, trade shows, and training.
