Project 1: Evaluative Writing

Assignment: Effective writing begins with effective reading comprehension. Academic writing (college-level writing), is a conversation between two or more authors. This conversation usually involves one author responding to another author’s work. Knowing how effective an author was at conveying their message is key when choosing a text to respond to. Writers will often take into consideration what an author’s goals are, and whether or not the author met those goals, before writing their response.
For this assignment, read Andrea Chang’s newspaper article, “The Kardashians: Cashing in with a Capital K.” Write an evaluative summary that introduces your audience to the author and topic. Analyze Chang’s work to see how effective she was at delivering her message to her intended audience. You will be writing to an audience that is unfamiliar with the Kardashian “brand.”
Reading:
• Read Chang’s article “The Kardashians: Cashing in with a Capital K”
• Read chapters from Read Write Connect as specified by your instructor.
Prewriting:
• Define who the author is and what information your audience needs to know about the author
• Annotate each paragraph of the article with a 1-2 word summary
• Determine what the author’s goals were for writing the piece and whether, or not, the author met those goals.
• Freewrite to see what you remember from your first reading of the text. Complete this for each additional read through. Save old drafts to track your progress.
• Write a “working thesis” for your summary
• Create a reverse outline of Chang’s article
Drafting/Revising
• Write a complete draft that you believe accurately, clearly, and concisely describes Chang’s work.
• Evaluate your writing with your instructor, or LEC tutor, for accuracy, conciseness, and clarity.
• Revise your draft
• Evaluate sentence coherence and sentence syntax of your summary.
• Participate in peer review and instructor conferences.
• Revise your draft.
Editing
• Proofread and edit conventions, grammar, word usage, punctuation, and MLA format.
• Write the final draft.
