Using Utilization Management to Determine Courses of Action in a Canadian Hospital

This 5 page paper answers four utilization questions arising out of the need to add a 30-bed, chronic care unit to an existing Canadian local hospital. The issues that need to be addressed with regard to this new unit include the fact that it will have to accommodate some patients immediately from another hospital that is closing; and it will have some patients come to it from the hospital where the unit is located. The Director needs to determine budgetary and staffing needs, and estimate the effect the new unit will have on the hospital's resources. The Director also needs to devise performance indicators for the unit.
