New therapies are aimed at preventing such growth, especially as the tumors can generate networks of blood vessels to nourish and enhance their growth. The writer suggests that one way of developing a new anti-cancer treatment is to begin with organ culture and computer modeling, which provide preliminary information on the efficacy of the treatment, followed by a combination of a prodrug enzyme used only at the site of the tumor.
