Electric Pencil, which set the precedent in 1976, set the stage for over four hundred different word processing packages to hit the market, with most of those eventually "fading into oblivion" (Bergin, 2006, pp. 32-47). The trial and error progression of technological advancement was not forgotten with word processing software, inasmuch as the rudimentary beginnings ultimately gave way to programs that exceed anything personal computing was expected to achieve.
