Under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security, the Homeland Security Advisory System (HSAS) was developed as a means by which to identify national threat conditions based upon the changing nature of myriad criteria. This color-based system utilizes five hues to indicate the degree of proposed threat; each subsequent tick up the shade scale indicates a situation that is quickly reaching perilous levels of national safety where terrorist activity is concerned.
