12 pages in length. Considered the watershed moment of the American Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg served to bring to a close a procession of bloody battles that were fought to uphold the notion of democracy. While the Battle of Gettysburg may have signaled the beginning of the end of this chapter in history, it was that way only because of one man's inability to clinch the victory. Had it not been for a significant blunder by what was the otherwise stellar military prowess of Robert E. Lee - not the least of which was his inherent sense of timing - the Civil war might not have ended when it did. Lee's bigger than life persona was not enough to save him from his own poor insight that was a large part of the equation of his ultimate surrender in a battle that served to determine the nation's future course.
