A 3 page research paper that discusses the relationship between nutrition and HIV. Extreme weight loss frequently occurs among HIV-positive patients. Known as HIV wasting, weight loss can occur for a variety of reasons, which include cognitive impairment and difficult in swallowing, but it can also occur due to altered “gonadal, adrenal and thyroid function” (Ungvarski, 1996, p. 26). Nurses play a crucial role in combating HIV wasting through educational interventions with HIV asymptomatic patients, as well as acting as a resource for information on successful interventions that can be employed when HIV wasting strikes (Ungvarski, 1996).
