James Longstreet graduated from West Point where he was commissioned as a brevet second lieutenant in the 4th U.S. Infantry, and spent the first two years of his career in Jefferson Barracks in Missouri. He was not convinced the South should secede but his loyalty to his home led to him resigning his commission in the Army and joining the Confederate army in Alabama.
