The percentage of obese children between the ages of 6 and 11 was 18 percent in 2012 while 21 percent of adolescents are obese. This does not include the numbers who are overweight. This has been a national problem for many years and it is now a global epidemic. There are numerous negative physical health effects of obesity but there are also quite a number of negative psychological effects. For instance, obesity impacts body image. This is a focus in the paper although it does provide the many risks to physical health. There is less written about the negative psychological impact of obesity, which makes it difficult to provide valid data but certain things are known and these are included in the paper.
