Trace of Juliets Progress During the Play While Comparing her to Romeo

Trace Juliets development during the course of the play while comparing her with Romeo where possible.


In the play "Romeo and Juliet" we see Juliet maturing rapidly into a young inexperienced woman into a mature woman.

We first hear of Juliet when her mother is talking to the nurse about her age. We hear "she is not fourteen" this gives the audience an idea that Juliet will be young and immature.

We see Juliet when her mother,Lady Capulet asks her "how stands your disposition to be married". Juliet replies " it is an honor that i dream not of" this tells us that she has never really thought about marriage before now, reinforcing the audiences views about her being young and childish. Lady Capulet says "like of Paris's love" Juliet replies "I'll look to like if looking liking move" this tells us that Juliet would never think of disobeying her mother. She is very obedient and will always rely on her mothers consent to do things.

From the first scenes we can see and image of Juliet being portrayed, she is obedient and young and has never really thought about getting married before.

At the Capulets party, Romeo first sets eyes on Juliet. He compares her to a "holy shrine" then she replies with more religious imagery. This shows she is young and inexperienced but is still clever and can flirt. This is the first bit in the play that shows Juliet's growing maturity and cleverness.

We then get further evidence of her cleverness when she is asking the nurse about the guests at the party showing no real interest in Romeo As to not give her liking for him away.

In the balcony scene we see Juliet being the sensible one and Romeo wanting sex. This takes over his world and he becomes childish and immature. Juliet is sensible. "Whats Montague" meaning she doesnt care about the name she just wants love. She is being smart about it though. She will not risk getting caught with a Montague. In the second part of the balcony scene we get evidence of Romeo wanting marriage. Juliet is realising that it is moving to fast. Romeo is only interested n sex.

When Juliet is waiting for the nurse to return with news from Romeo, we see that she is desperatly in love and cannot wait for the nurse to return with news. When the nurse returns she see shes how...
